ORAS Adventure 1: A New Beginning

The world has lost its balance.

Death and devastation are inevitable.

The seas will engulf life and the land will be torn asunder.

The light from above will bring the end of all.

I wearily opened my eyes as I lifted my head. “What a weird dream…” I thought as I stretched my limbs. After I yawned, I noticed my surroundings. Somehow I had wound up in the back of a truck. “Wait…where am I?”

All of a sudden, the truck stopped, causing a large box to fall on my head. “OW!!! Hey, watch the driving, will ya?” I then gasped as I thought, “No…not again!”

I quickly glanced down to see that I now had a female body. She was going through puberty and was dressed in a tight-fitting red tank top with black biker shorts. Reaching up, I felt hair in two long strands falling over my shoulders, while the rest of it was held up in a green headband…or was it a bandana…something.

Before I could ponder the changes, I heard a voice saying, “May, get out of there; we’re home!”

Not wanting to arouse suspicion, I walked out and saw a woman in a floral print blouse and skirt. She was guiding a group of Machoke carrying boxes.

“Oh, May, take a look; welcome to Littleroot Town! I love how quaint it is here,” the woman said, obviously thinking me to be her daughter May.

I didn’t want to get her suspicious of me, so I said, “Yeah, looks really nice…”

The woman looked at me and said, “I know you didn’t like the idea of moving, but your father and I felt it was better if we moved closer to his new job in Petalburg City.”

“Then why didn’t we move to Petalburg City instead of here?”

“There weren’t any affordable houses there. Besides, a good friend of your father’s lives here. In fact, his house is right next-door. Why don’t you go over and introduce yourself? I can handle unpacking everything.”

Thankful for the reprieve, I walked over and saw a boy running out. “Oh, hey! Who are you?”

Remembering the name the other woman called me, I said, “May.”

“…wait, you’re our new neighbor, aren’t you? Sorry, I was told you were a Gym Leader’s kid, so I kinda assumed you’d be a boy.”

“…wow, that isn’t sexist.”

“Sorry, sorry! Anyway, my name’s Brendan. Wish I could stay and chat some more, but I’ve got some work to do for my dad. See you later!”

With that, the boy ran off, leaving me to stand in confusion over what I had just witnessed. “Uh…”

“Oh, are you here to meet my husband?” A woman from the house Brendan left asked.

“Uh, yeah, I think.”

“You’ll have to forgive my son; he took after my husband more than I think either of them are aware. Anyway, Professor Birch is out doing fieldwork; he enjoys getting up close and personal with Pokémon in their natural environment rather than read about it in the lab.”

“Okay, I guess I’ll go look for him, then.”

I quickly left and looked all over the town, hoping to find the professor. “Maybe he knows what happened to me. I have no idea what’s going on, but I don’t want to worry anyone here too much. Maybe if I pose my problem as a hypothetical…then again, that lady said he does fieldwork quite often…”

After an hour, I saw a little girl with a worried expression on her face. “Hey, what’s wrong?”

“I heard some yelling up ahead. I’d go check it out, but I’m too afraid.”

Not sure if it’d lead me to the professor or not, I put a hand on the girl’s shoulder and said, “Don’t worry; I’ll check it out.” With that, I ventured into the woods to investigate the yelling.

Not long after I took my first steps, I heard someone yelling, “SOMEONE HELP ME!!!”

Running toward the yell, I saw a portly man with a beard being threatened by a Poochyena. “Oh, you there! Please help me. There are three Poke Balls in that pouch by your feet; use a Pokémon to fend off this one!!”

Looking down, I instinctively grabbed the ball on the right and threw it toward the Poochyena. At once, I saw a blue fish-like monster emerge from the ball and stand against the Poochyena.

“Mudkip, eh? Not bad!” I thought, smirking. I then dropped the smirk as I thought, “Oh, crap! I don’t know this Mudkip’s moveset!! What am I…”

“Tackle, Growl and Water Gun.”

“Oh, thanks. Now, let’s…wait; who said that?!”

“I did,” a small voice came. Looking down, I saw the Mudkip staring at me. “Well, are we gonna fight this Poochyena or what?”

I was surprised the Mudkip was talking to me, but said, “Yeah, use Water Gun!”

At once, the Mudkip shot a stream of water at Poochyena, who looked toward Mudkip with a menacing glare. “How dare you! I’ll make you pay for that!!” the Poochyena yelled.

“Use Tackle!” I yelled, trying to ignore the strange fact that I could hear what the Pokémon were saying.

Mudkip, without a word, tackled the Poochyena, knocking it out of the way and freeing the portly man. The Poochyena then fled deeper into the woods, yelling, “I won’t forget this!!”

“Thank you so much!” the portly man said, catching my attention. “Why don’t we go back to my lab and talk about this further?”

“Um, yeah, sure,” I said as I followed the man back to Littleroot Town. I then looked as the Mudkip followed me. “What’s going on here? How’d I end up in Hoenn? Why can I understand Pokémon? …and why the hell am I a girl?! I hope I get some answers soon.”
